What Causes Melasma?
Melasma often shows up on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and nose. It’s most common in women, especially during pregnancy or while taking birth control pills or hormone therapy. Sun exposure plays a major role, too, as UV rays trigger pigment production.Â
Genetics can also contribute, making some people more prone to melasma than others. Unlike general dark spots, melasma tends to be deeper and more reactive to light and heat.
Treatments Dermatologists Trust
Our dermatologists have several tools to help fade discoloration and protect your skin from further damage:
- Topical Creams:Â Prescription creams containing hydroquinone, retinoids, vitamin C, kojic acid, or azelaic acid can gradually lighten dark areas. These formulas need to be used consistently and carefully to avoid irritation.
- Chemical Peels: Gentle peels using glycolic or salicylic acid exfoliate the skin and may help improve pigmentation over time. You’ll typically need a series of treatments for noticeable results.
- Microdermabrasion:Â This minimally invasive procedure removes the top layer of skin to reduce surface-level pigmentation. It works best on milder cases of melasma.
- Oral Medications:Â Tranexamic acid pills may help prevent pigment from forming.
- Laser and Light Treatments: Certain lasers or light-based treatments, like IPL, may help reduce visible pigment. We typically take a careful approach with these methods to support gradual improvement while minimizing the risk of irritation.Â
- Sun Protection:Â This is non-negotiable. Broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, especially ones containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, can help prevent flare-ups. We may also recommend protective clothing and sun-avoidance strategies.
