What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is an injectable solution that is used to reduce or eliminate extra fat below the chin (sometimes called a “double chin”). It is made from deoxycholic acid, which comes from a naturally-occurring molecule in your body and acts as a fat eliminator when injected into the chin. This safe and FDA-approved cosmetic option is available by prescription only, and must be given by or under the supervision of a doctor.

KYBELLA® may be recommended if you:

  • Are unhappy or self-conscious about a “double chin”
  • Feel you look heavier or older than you are as a result of excess fat below the chin
  • Do not want to undergo cosmetic surgery
  • Exercise and eat well but are unable to get rid of fat beneath the chin

According to recent studies, about 80% of adults who suffer from excess fat below the chin are concerned about their condition. In order to avoid cosmetic surgery, more and more patients are turning to KYBELLA® to safely remove fat through a simple injection, rather than more invasive procedures.

What does KYBELLA® treatment involve?

Before treatment, one of our experienced dermatologists at Hollywood Dermatology will examine the area beneath your chin. You and your doctor will discuss your medical history and current health in order to determine if KYBELLA® is right for you.

During treatment at Hollywood Dermatology, one of our KYBELLA®-trained physicians will carefully inject the solution into targeted areas beneath your chin. The exact area and amount required will vary depending on your needs. The entire procedure usually takes under thirty minutes, and our physicians will monitor your progress throughout the treatment to ensure that it is both safe and successful.

How many KYBELLA® injections will I need?

Everyone’s chin is different and therefore the number of chin injections needed varies from patient to patient. Your doctor will help you decide a treatment plan based on your individual needs and cosmetic goals.

In general, most patients can expect the following:

  • Each treatment session is usually 15-20 minutes
  • Most patients receive around 6 treatments
  • Treatments can be done as often as every month

Are there risks of using KYBELLA®?

According to the FDA, the main ingredient of KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid), which is responsible for destroying fat cells, could potentially damage surrounding cells if the treatment is used improperly. To prevent skin or other cell harm, it is important to only use KYBELLA® with a trusted dermatologist who has training and expertise in this specific treatment.

The most commonly reported side effects of using KYBELLA® include the following injection site reactions:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Bruising

Most reactions subside within one month. Talk to your doctor if you have any of the above reactions that last for an extended period of time.
