What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that usually occur in the legs and feet because standing and walking causes an increased pressure in these veins. Varicose veins and spider veins often occur together, and for many people they are simply a cosmetic concern. However, for others, they can be painful and lead to other problems. The dermatologists at Hollywood Dermatology are experienced in treating varicose veins with endovenous ablation and ambulatory phlebectomy.

What is endovenous ablation therapy?

Endovenous ablation of varicose veins is a minimally invasive varicose vein treatment that uses laser energy or radiofrequency to close the vein off. Usually the procedure is image-guided for higher accuracy and reduced complications during the procedure. At Hollywood Dermatology, we are pleased to offer the latest technology in endovenous ablation treatment, called the Luminetx VeinViewer®, which provides the most accuracy during the procedure.

Why is endovenous ablation therapy performed?

Endovenous ablation can be used for cosmetic purposes, making varicose veins less visible. Additionally, the treatment is often used to relieve uncomfortable symptoms that may be associated with varicose veins, including:

  • Aching pain
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration
  • Inflammation of the vein
  • Skin irritation or ulcers

What does endovenous ablation therapy involve?

Before the procedure, the treatment area is cleaned and shaved (if needed). Your doctor uses a very small needle to inject a local anesthetic, which numbs the area before treatment.

During the procedure, your vein is cauterized (burned) and closed off in order to trigger blood flow to other, healthier veins. This part of the procedure usually causes minimal or no discomfort, as the local anesthetic numbs the area. The treatment generally takes under an hour to complete, but timing may vary depending on the severity of the condition. When multiple veins need treatment, there may be a need for follow-up treatments over a couple of months.

After the treatment, some patients have mild discomfort that subsides within a few weeks of the procedure. Most patients see a noticeable difference in the appearance of veins within one week of endovenous ablation, but complete results may take longer.

Are there any side effects of endovenous ablation therapy?

Common side effects associated with endovenous ablation treatment generally occur around the treatment area and may include:

  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Redness
