5 Myths About Sun Protection, Debunked

Sunburned woman applying sunscreen to chest Living in sunny South Florida means you need to think about sun safety year-round. But with so much information out there, it’s easy to fall for bad advice.

At Hollywood Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists help people across Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale, West Miramar, and Doral protect their skin with the facts. Let’s clear up some common myths so you can keep your skin healthy and hopefully prevent skin cancer.

Myth #1: I Only Need Sunscreen at the Beach

Sun damage doesn’t just happen on vacation. Whether you’re walking your dog, driving to work, or running errands, your skin is exposed to UV rays. Even when you’re not in a swimsuit, daily sunscreen use is one of the best ways to prevent premature aging and reduce skin cancer risk.

Myth #2: A Base Tan Will Protect Me

There’s no such thing as a “safe tan.” Tanning is actually a sign of skin damage. A base tan doesn’t prevent sunburn, and it definitely doesn’t lower your chances of long-term sun damage. If you want color, self-tanner is a much safer option.

Myth #3: Dark Skin Doesn’t Burn

This one is a common belief, but it’s not true. While darker skin tones have more melanin, they can still burn and are still at risk for skin cancer. In fact, skin cancer is often diagnosed later in people with darker complexions. Regular checks and sunscreen use are still just as important!

Myth #4: I Don’t Need Sunscreen on Cloudy Days

Even when the sun isn’t out, UV rays are still getting through the clouds. That’s why people often end up burned after an overcast beach day. Apply sunscreen every morning as part of your routine, just like brushing your teeth.

Myth #5: One Application Lasts All Day

Sunscreen wears off. Whether you’re sweating, swimming, or just moving through your day, you need to reapply every two hours to stay protected. Most people also don’t use enough of it. A shot glass-sized amount is a good guide for full-body coverage.
