What is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting ® is a new, non-invasive procedure that has been clinically proven to reduce fat by exposing fat cells to cool temperatures. It is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical procedure that uses controlled cooling to gently eliminate fat. CoolSculpting® uses state-of-the-art technology and is performed only by doctors who have been trained in the procedure. The advanced technology is able to target precise areas of fat and eliminate the cells for good—without causing harm to any other cells in your body.

Hollywood Dermatology is a certified CoolSculpting® provider, offering treatment from our experienced, board-certified specialists at several office locations.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared non-invasive procedure that eliminates fat cells through freezing. The precise temperature settings leave surrounding tissue unaffected. During your treatment, one of our providers will use a gentle cooling applicator to target and treat specific areas of fat that are resistant to lifestyle changes.

What Areas Does CoolSculpting Treat?

CoolSculpting is designed to treat several areas where people typically have difficulty reducing fat, including your abdomen, lower flank (“loves handles”), inner and outer thighs, under the buttocks (“banana roll”), below the chin (“double chin”), and on the back. Our providers will use different applicators that comfortably fit in these areas to artfully sculpt a slimmer figure.

How Long Do CoolSculpting Treatments Take?

This non-invasive body contouring treatment typically takes just 30 minutes to an hour and requires no downtime, so you can treat unwanted fat on your lunch break.

Can CoolSculpting Help Me Lose Weight?

While CoolSculpting can give you a slimmer look, it isn’t considered a weight-loss treatment. CoolSculpting can define specific areas of the body for a trimmer physique if you're at or near your ideal weight. While you’ll likely notice a big difference in the mirror, you shouldn’t expect a major change on the scale.

Who Is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting?

The best CoolSculpting candidate has pinchable fat, is in generally good health, and has realistic expectations of treatment outcomes. Additionally, the CoolSculpting manufacturer advises those with a BMI under 30 will see the best results.

If you have significant skin laxity or are still in the middle of your weight loss journey, another treatment might be better for you. Our providers can discuss the benefits and limitations of CoolSculpting at your consultation and determine if it could help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

When Will I See CoolSculpting Results?

After CoolSculpting, your body will start to eliminate the treated fat cells. This process can take up to six months post-treatment. You can typically expect to see initial results within the first month after your appointment. However, most CoolSculpting results won’t be visible until after two months.

How Long Do CoolSculpting Results Last?

CoolSculpting removes fat cells in the treatment area, so results are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. If you gain weight, the fat cells that remain will expand. Many of our patients say their CoolSculpting results motivate them to keep up their healthy lifestyle habits.

Can I Combine CoolSculpting® with Other Treatments?

Yes. CoolSculpting works on unwanted fat cells in a very precise way. Often, pockets of unwanted fat are just one of the problems affecting a person's feelings about their appearance. If you have unwanted fat as well as cellulite, you may want to combine your CoolSculpting sessions with QWO cellulite treatment. CoolSculpting may also be combined with Kybella as a follow-up, depending on the treatment area, to pick up any persistent fatty tissue that was not destroyed in the primary treatment program. The Hollywood Dermatology facilities in South Florida are equipped with multiple modalities for facial and body rejuvenation. When you visit us, you can explore your options for achieving your desired results with an experienced, board-certified provider.

How Effective is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting technology has been studied extensively over the years as a part of the expansion of this treatment platform. Originally, CoolSculpting applicators were designed to treat larger areas such as the abdomen, flanks, and thighs. Now, we have applicators that can treat small areas like the fat above the knees, the backs of the arms, bra rolls, a double-chin, and more. This is to say that the device and its applicators have been through multiple clinical investigations. Multiple research studies have concluded that CooSculpting can effectively eliminate up to 25% of the fat in a targeted area. As a non-surgical body contouring treatment, CoolSculpting has maintained a high success and satisfaction rate.

Can Men get CoolSculpting?

Yes! Men can achieve remarkable results from CoolSculpting treatments. Common treatment areas include the flanks, abdomen, chest, and neck. Because men's musculature can be obscured by a layer of stubborn fat, CoolSculpting may serve as an excellent modality to reveal that six-pack.

Is CoolSculpting® Painful?

The first generation of CoolSculpting treatments were said to be relatively painful. This gives us a few points to discuss. First, CoolSculpting technology has evolved over the many years this treatment has been performed. Newer CoolSculpting devices are known for being more comfortable and also more efficient; treatment times may be reduced in some instances, while treatment areas have expanded. Generally, patients do not describe CoolSculpting treatment as painful. They feel a tugging sensation as the applicator applies suction to the target area. They may feel tingling, mild cramping, or aching while the device cools tissue to the target temperature. Within a few minutes of beginning, the target area is numb. This lasts for the duration of the process. The post-treatment massage is also only mildly uncomfortable. Due to tissue numbness, the massage usually feels itchy or ticklish, not painful.

Discomfort can develop a day or two after CoolSculpting treatment. The skin can feel tender to the touch or the area may exhibit deep-tissue soreness. Patients sometimes develop bruising, but this does not hurt. To reduce post-treatment discomfort, patients may want to wear a compression garment around the treatment area. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can also support optimal comfort.

Is CoolSculpting® Safe?

According to multiple bodies of research,  CoolSculpting is a relatively safe and effective treatment for the elimination of localized areas of fat. There is a risk of a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, but it is very low. When you consult with an experienced provider about CoolSculpting body contouring treatment, they can discuss how this risk may relate to you based on your medical history. While it would be ideal if we could say there are absolutely no risks involved with any treatment, that isn't possible. What is possible is having viable solutions for unexpected complications. In the rare occurrence of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, in which the targeted fat cells expand and harden, a doctor may perform minimally-invasive liposuction to remove the affected fat cells.

Side Effects of CoolSculpting®

During the procedure, you may experience any of the following temporary side effects in the treatment area:

  • Intense cold
  • Tingling
  • Mild pinching
  • Pulling
  • Stinging

After treatment, patients often experience one or more of the following side effects, all of which usually subside within one week:

  • Cramping
  • Aching
  • Itching
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Swelling

How Long is Recovery after CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting is a completely non-invasive treatment for unwanted fat. The process may incur some side effects, but these are generally mild enough to manage without extensive downtime. In fact, many CoolSculpting patients work out the same day they have their treatment done. The vast majority of our CoolSculpting patients are back to work the day of or the day after their session. While normal activities can resume immediately after CoolSculpting treatment, it may take a day or two to feel back to 100 percent.
