Why sun protection remains important in the fall and winter

As fall creeps in and the weather gets cooler, many people fail to protect their skin as vigilantly as they do during the summer months when the Florida sun is at its most prevalent. However, the team at Hollywood Dermatology and Cosmetic Specialists encourage patients to be diligent about still protecting their skin from the sun’s rays during the fall and winter months. But why? Our doctors can assist patients in understanding the importance of sun protection year round!

Why should I protect my skin from the sun during the fall and winter?

Our providers hear this question a lot from our patients when we recommend that they continue to use a broad-spectrum high SPF sunscreen every day. Even though it’s cooler out and the days are shorter, the UV rays put out by the sun each day can still increase the risk of skin cancer and contribute to early aging.

Below are some tips for patients to consider during the cooler months for keeping the skin healthy:

  • Protect exposed skin with sunscreen even during the winter. If you’re wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, still apply sunscreen to the exposed areas such as face, neck, and hands.
  • Don’t assume there’s no UV rays even when it’s cloudy. A cloudy and overcast day might lead one to believe that sun protection is not necessary, but UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds, fog, and even through glass, meaning protection is also important indoors at your window-side office.
  • Use the right product. Not only should you be using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, but make sure you choose one that has a moisturizer to help combat dry skin that is more likely during the fall and winter months as humidity levels drop.
