Does CoolSculpting Last?
CoolSculpting is an effective treatment for improving problem spots such as under-bra bulge or stubborn belly fat. In this blog, the medical team at Hollywood Dermatology & Cosmetic Specialists in South Florida explain more about CoolSculpting, including how long you can expect results to last:
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat. It’s often used to treat trouble spots that resist improvement even after you follow a diet and exercise program.
How does it work?
The theory behind the procedure is supposed to have originated with doctors who noticed that children who ate a lot of popsicles lost fat in their cheeks and ended up with dimples. Since fat is more sensitive to temperature than your skin is, fat cells die before skin cells do when exposed to freezing temperatures.
CoolSculpting works by placing a roll of fat in two suction panels that cool the fat to a freezing temperature. After the cells are frozen, the liver helps remove them from the body starting within the first few weeks after treatment. Within three months, you should see the full results of your treatment.
Why is it used, and who makes a good candidate?
The procedure is best used to remove fat from areas that have proven resistant to diet and exercise.
- You may be a good candidate for CoolSculpting if the following apply to you:
- You’re not obese but instead have small amounts of extra fat.
- You want to treat area such as the following: thighs, lower back, belly, sides, legs, buttocks, arms and/or under your chin
Your doctor will also consider other factors, such as your age and skin quality. If your tissue is thick and firm, it may not be easily accessed by the suction panels, so your results may not be as dramatic. And if you have certain diseases – such as cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria (PCH) – you shouldn’t have this type of treatment.
How long do the results last?
The results of CoolSculpting are permanent, since once the fat cells are killed off, they don’t come back. However, if you gain weight, this weight will go somewhere, and it might very well be gained in the areas you’ve had treated.
How can you maintain the fat loss that occurs after CoolSculpting?
You’ll find that since muscle weighs more than fat, the fat you lose probably won’t result in a dramatic weight loss. But you’ll have a better shape and be better proportioned and may drop one or two sizes in clothing.
It’s important to not gain weight afterward, since it could reduce or eliminate the results of your CoolSculpting treatment. You’ll need to follow a healthy diet that provides the right number of calories and nutrients and follow an exercise plan that helps you get moving.
